🎬 What is Peribahasa Time?
Peribahasa Time is a weekly short series that explores the beauty and wisdom of Malay and Arabic proverbs. In each episode, the speaker will:
- Share one Malay proverb and its Arabic equivalent (or one with a similar meaning)
- Explain the meaning behind the proverbs
- Provide real-life examples of how they are used
- Discuss interesting cultural differences reflected in the metaphors
📺 Episode 1 Recap:
In the first episode, our speaker Farah introduced the Malay proverb:
“Melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya”
(To bend a bamboo, start from the shoot)
and its Arabic counterpart:
“التعليم في الصغر كالنقش على الحجر”
(Education in childhood is like engraving on stone)
She discussed how both proverbs emphasize the importance of early education and shaping character from a young age. One of the interesting cultural insights she shared was the difference in imagery — the Malay proverb uses bamboo, a common and meaningful plant in Southeast Asia, while the Arabic proverb uses stone, reflecting the environment and perception of permanence in Arab culture.
